Who is CardinalCommerce?

Founded in 1999, Mike and Tim joined together and brought Chandra on, and these three guys set sail with their good ideas, charm and a checkbook. Cardinal has grown to become a global leader in enabling authenticated payments, secure transactions and alternative payment brands, and on December 1, 2016, an announcement was made that Cardinal would be acquired by Visa. As of February 1, 2017, Cardinal is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Visa.

Our products are used globally: across 6 continents (Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America), in more than 200 countries and in more than 180 different currencies. However, this growth has never stopped us from staying focused on the single, most important thing – taking care of our Customers. We do this by providing 24/7 customer service and support from our very own in-house staff located in Cleveland, Ohio.

We partner with a variety of payment brands, processors, shopping carts, gateways and order management systems to provide an array of options for our Customers to choose from. Each partner provides unique service opportunities for our Customers so that they are able to choose which platform fits their needs the best. Additionally, we continue to provide safe, secure solutions for the eCommerce and mCommerce industries.

Cardinal is consistently focused on providing safe and secure solutions to our Customers. We are an innovative company that is always looking for ways to drive digital commerce for our Customers’ businesses. Where in the World?

It might sound hokey, but we love what we do and we love where we live. As a global company, we could have selected anywhere in the world to set up our headquarters. But we didn’t just pick anywhere. We chose to be headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, because we are Clevelanders. We wanted to do something in our hometown.

What we do

Cardinal offers unparalleled flexibility in authentication with a configurable rules engine on our Centinel Platform. This is displayed through our Payments Ecosystem below.

This approach, driven by years of experience and feedback from both merchants and financial institutions, enables our Customers to choose which transactions to authenticate based on a set of filters that control fraud and maximize sales.

Industry Pioneers

  • Mike
  • "When I was young, I dreamed I worked for an important company in Cleveland named Cardinal. That dream came true. Bringing some really smart people together at Cardinal, we came up with ideas that no one else had thought of, and received patents for our authentication and tokenization technology development. In just 15 years we have grown into a successful business, processing billions of transactions securely. This is a testament to our commitment to our Customers and our dedication FutureProofing the payments industry."
    Michael A. Keresman, III
  • "When Cardinal was started, we were one of the first companies involved in providing safe and secure eCommerce transactions. We have been recognized as authorities in the remote payments space, due to our dedicated and knowledgeable team. As a result of this, we are often invited to speak at industry events and meet and collaborate with many of our industry peers. Today, we are the leaders in protecting our Customers’ businesses. It’s a satisfying feeling. One I knew we would always achieve."
    Tim Sherwin
    Co-Founder, Chief Executive Officer
  • Chandra
  • "Cardinal anticipated challenges in the card-not-present industry, and built our technology with this flexibility in mind. The products and services we offer our Customers evolve with the payment industry. With the upcoming launch of 3-D Secure, the rise of tokenization and multi-factor authentication methods, our platforms are positioned to deliver the benefits of these advancements to our Customers."

Cardinal's Early Contributors

Cardinal would like to recognize the employees who have been with us since the very early years, and have worked in many technology, product development and Customer-facing roles to make CardinalCommerce who we are today.

In the early days, each of these employees did a little of everything … and a lot of amazing and visionary work. They are still with us today, and their passion and experience, combined with the rest of the staff, keeps Cardinal innovating as a global leader.

We salute them!

Don't Take Our Word for It

Cardinal's Consumer Authentication service is so much more than an MPI. As a large enterprise merchant, we have seen how complex the payments ecosystem can be and how problems can arise if you aren't an industry expert. Cardinal has done an excellent job solving our problems and helping us manage our updated Consumer Authentication program.
Connecting with CardinalCommerce's Centinel has been a huge success for Boscovs.com. Incorporating consumer authentication into our online store has increased sales, greatly reduced chargebacks, and has reduced our overall costs with savings in our interchange fees. Our partnership with the Cardinal team fits perfectly with our corporate values: Cardinal's focus is always the customer, like Boscov's, and they are part of the Boscov's family.
I've been in business since 1993. I have never had such a great experience with any other commerce company than what I've found with Cardinal. Their product is fantastic, but what I love most about them is their customer service, extreme attention to detail and follow-up. If you are going to be successful in the online merchant world, you will need Cardinal on your side.
