MasterCard® in the
News - New U.S. SecureCode™ liability
standards bring merchants even more benefits starting October
14th

As
of October 14th, MasterCard will hold card Issuers, rather than
eCommerce merchants, liable for certain fraud-related chargebacks on
eCommerce transactions conducted using SecureCode in the United
States.
3-D Secure™
Background: MasterCard
SecureCode is a service which allows cardholders, through the use of
a PIN, to validate their identity directly with their card Issuer
when shopping online at participating MCSC
merchants.
These New Changes Improve Benefits for
eCommerce Merchants: Prior to October 14th, merchants using
SecureCode were liable for chargebacks on eCommerce transactions
which were not fully authenticated, meaning, when cardholders were
not enrolled in the SecureCode program.
Now, merchants who
have enabled SecureCode will NO LONGER BE LIABLE for fraud-based
chargebacks, as long as the merchant ATTEMPTS to authenticate the
cardholder and the Issuer approves the transaction REGARDLESS OF
CARDHOLDER ENROLLMENT STATUS.*

• 37 (No
Cardholder Authorization) • 63 (Cardholder Does Not Recognize –
Potential Fraud)
Cardinal’s Superior Integration:
With a CardinalCommerce integration of SecureCode, and the other
3-D Secure protocol, merchants have access to real-time reporting -
visibility into the day-to-day activity of the programs, along with
the intrinsic benefits of Cardinal’s hosted solution including
managed upgrades and on-going license renewals. Also, merchants have
access to the Cardinal technical support team 24x7x365, the most
experienced 3-D Secure integrators in the business.
(*Benefits exist as long as the merchant properly
transmits the data elements which identify a transaction as a
SecureCode transaction in both the authorization and the deposit
records passed to the Issuer.)
